2007 BDAE ANNUAL BURSARY PRESENTATION
Introduction by Dr Tim Bushell of Oxley Developments
The Awards, first presented in 1998 are sponsored by BDAE and local engineering companies or companies which depend on engineering, all concerned at the shortfall in young people entering Engineering. This has recently been recognised nationally with the Government expressing concern about the dwindling applicants for and roles in Science and Engineering further education courses and subsequently engineering as a profession. We now see the results of this locally, the sixth form college has started engineering courses, and as you may be aware that the Royal Academy of Engineering has designated our area to pioneer the Barrow Engineering Project which Ed Elvish who until recently was Principal of the Sixth Form College will be lead and I’m delighted to welcome Ed here tonight to assist with the presentation of the Bursary Awards and tell us a little about the project.
Engineers design and built the products we all use daily as well as the massive projects we sometimes take for granted. We will be hearing about one very large project tonight. I have found my career in engineering to be both fascinating and rewarding. My father was a civil engineer, he built bridges for a living and with a passion so I had, I guess, a role model of the very best kind. It is the Association’s hope that the encouragement of the Bursary will awaken such passion in these young people.
Before we move on to the awards themselves, a few words of thanks:
Sponsors
FETL, NW Evening Mail, B L Gilbert, Sir John Fisher Foundation, Tritech, Oxley Developments, BAE Systems as well as BDAE.
Schools
I would like to thank staff at these colleges for their support in nominating pupils for this scheme.

2000: The continuing sponsorship has allowed us this year to make the main bursary awards and in addition the first set of awards to the most improved student in engineering subjects in each school. The awards were presented at an extremely interesting lecture in November on the Formula Student Racing Car designed, procured and built by students at Lancaster University, and the bursaries were awarded as follows:- First Gregory Foot of Victoria High, Second Caroline Hufton of Dowdales, Third equal Christopher Plant of Parkview and Daniel Sharpe of St Bernard's.

1999: Due to additional sponsorship from a number of firms in the district involved in a wide variety of engineering pursuits, three bursaries were given valued at £100, £75 and £25 respectively. These were won by Frazer Daly of Millom School, David Howarth of Victoria High, and as third was too close to separate Alex Patterson of St Bernard’s and Paul Wright of Walney School. All of whom have gone on to do 'A' level studies. They report that these are going well and they are now involved in University applications and interviews. We hope to hear of their continued success in 2001.
1998: The first year of the award, two bursaries were given and were won by Oliver Gray of Cartmel School who has now successfully completed his studies at Barrow 6th Form College and Catriona MacKinnon of Ulverston Victoria who has also successfully completed her studies in their 6th Form. Both have done extremely well even though Catriona was inclining towards veterinary studies. Both have now embarked on degree courses, Oliver at Warwick doing Mathematics and Physics and Catriona at Edinburgh doing Veterinary Science. The Association wishes them all the best for the future and looks forward to reporting their further progress.
all with Graham Sturgeon, British Airways Senior First Officer
